TUs urged to act with responsibility
MOHAMMED NAALIR
The Convenor of the Joint Council of Trade Unions and Western
Province Governor Alavi Mowlana yesterday stated that all Governmental
and private institutions, business ventures and factories should take
precautionary security measures to protect the employees, institutions
and the properties to protect them from being subject to terrorist
attacks.
Addressing the media at Western Province Governor's office, he said
ensuring security is a fundamental duty of all trade unions.
Business institutions and factories should take steps to establish
civil security centres within office premises to ensure the safety of
the employees, the institutions and property. He stressed the necessity
for all trade unions to work together considering the security of the
country, innocent civilians and protection of the entire employee
community.
He said the trade unions should not engage in trade union activities
in such a critical situation considering the security of the country and
the safety of innocent civilians taking India as an example. No trade
unions would engage in trade union activities in such a situation in
India.
Not only the trade unions but also community welfare centres should
come forward to arrive at sustainable peace over a discussion. Muslims,
Tamils and Sinhalese must work together for peace forgetting their race,
caste and religious differences.
Addressing the event Public Services Trade Union Chairman W. H.
Piyadasa said that Joint Council of Trade Unions has come to the
conclusion that due to the Government's ongoing security measures to
eradicate terrorism, LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is attempting to
create a tense situation in the South.
He has launched brutal suicide attacks targeting innocent civilians.
"Bloodthirsty Prabhakaran is trying to create instability in the
South. The Nugegoda incident displays the true nature of the LTTE
leader. In the past too, when the LTTE was defeated by the Armed Forces
they targeted innocent civilians."
