Swedish assistance for waste water treatment project
Sweden provided an interest free loan of US $ 91.9 million for the
establishment of waste water treatment facilities in Ratmalana, Moratuwa,
Ja-Ela and Ekala areas. The loan is provided through the AB Svensk
Exportkredit of Sweden.
The proceeds will be utilised to manage the pollution in Ratmalana,
Moratuwa, Ja-Ela and Ekala with appropriate collection of industrial and
domestic waste water, treatment in central treatment plants, with
disposal of treated waste water and sludge in such a way that it is not
harmful to the environment or the people.
The project will cover 204 industries and 35,000 residents in the
Ratmalana and Moratuwa areas and about 130 industries and 28,500
residents in the Ja-Ela and Ekala areas. With the implementation of this
project the environmental degradation and resulting threats to the
public health will be greatly reduced.
The provision of a waste water collection, treatment and disposal
scheme for the industries will improve the long-term economic viability
in the area. The project will be implemented by the National Water
Supply and Drainage Board (NWS & DB).
