Forces help hospitals run smoothly
The Health Ministry yesterday took steps to deploy Security Forces
personnel at hospitals following the strike action by a number of health
unions which disregarded a court order.
The unions are protesting against the introduction of the fingerprint
time attendance system for all cadres except doctors and nurses at
Government hospitals.
Although the health services were affected to some extent, most
hospitals catered to the maximum possible number of patients. Police
provided security to hospital employees and patients.
National Hospital Director Dr. Hector Weerasinghe said all emergency
and previously scheduled operations were completed on schedule. Nearly
400 minor staffers and drivers reported to work yesterday, he said.
Patients were directed to get their medicine free of charge from Osu
Sala outlets. All regular clinics have been held at the de Soysa
Maternity Hospital with the aid of airwomen.
Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said all steps have been
taken to ensure a satisfactory service to patients. Meanwhile, Police
arrested two striking health union members.
