Institute of Chartered Accountants national conference begins on
Thursday
The Twenty-eighth National Conference of the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) will be held from December 6 to 8 at
the Cinnamon Grand.

This is a much looked forward event of the Chartered Accountants in
Sri Lanka where current professional topics are deliberated providing a
healthy platform for dissemination of views ending up with a traditional
dinner dance promoting goodwill and friendship among the professionals.
President of the ICASL Yohan Perera addressing the media said that
ICASL is the premier National Accounting body in Sri Lanka catering to
nearly 23,000 students while the professional membership of the
Institute consists of 3500 members of which nearly 25% are employed
overseas.
Apart from regulating the profession, conducting study programmes
ICASL is also empowered by the Sri Lanka Accountancy Monitoring Board (SLAMB)
as the sole authority of the Sri Lanka Accounting Standards and Sri
Lanka Auditing Standards.
ICASL president stressed that due to IT enabled systems taking over
Accounting, today CFO's are directly involved in the strategic
Management process with the CEO's thus changing the Accountant's role in
Business and the conference aims to focus on this.
Perera said given the diversity of student population ICASL has now
taken steps to set up "Knowledge Centres" in the provincial Capitals of
Southern, Central, North Central and most recently the Wayamba Province.
He said that given the prevalent deficiencies in the Teaching English
Language at Secondary School level ICASL has come out with a revised
syllabus in Business communication under the theme of "English for
Accountants", additionally an ultra modern "multi Media English Language
Centre" backed up by IT facilities was opened recently with emphasis on
effective presentation focusing all aspects of Langauge teaching.
The ICASL President was confident these strategies will definitely
assists a majority of students to perform better at the examinations as
well as in their professional careers. Conference Committee Chairman
Preethi Jayewardene elaborated on this year's theme "Energising for
Tomorrow".
He said this theme relates to the previous years "Transcending
Horizons" to gear the Sri Lankan Business Sector to perform better under
turbulent conditions accordingly subject of HR practices will be under
consideration.
Chairman Technical Committee Suren Rajakariar said they are common
with the Sri Lankan situation often described with galloping inflation,
rising interest rates, threatening oil shocks, inefficient public
service, instability of Exchange rates and the aim of the conference
will be to deliberate on possible strategies to survive and grow within
this scenario and for this purpose an eminent panel of presenters
comprising R.M.B. Senanayake, Jeetendra, Marcelline and Deva De Silva,
Gopal Nagpal from mercer, India, Ashok Mahindru, the Managing Director
of the Advance Group of Companies, India and Lalith Kahatapitiya,
Founder and Chairman of KIK Group of Companies, have been lined up.
