Sri Lanka to take part in World Squash Championships

Sri Lanka will take part in the World Squash Championships which is
to be held in Chennai, India in December this year. The players who
excel at the forthcoming Senior National Squash Championship will be
picked to take part in the World Championships.
The Senior Squash Nationals will be worked off from November 28 to
December 1 at the Gymkhana Club’s Squash Complex, Colombo 07 in which
all ranked players will be seen in action. The tournament is conducted
by the Sri Lanka Squash Federation and sponsored by the James Finlay and
Company Limited for the fifth time.
This year’s tournament will include several up and coming young
players. Some have reached the top eight and are expected to offer a
stiff competition to the former players.
The events to be worked out are: Men’s open, men’s over 35, men’s
over 45, men’s over 50, men’s novices, women’s open and women’s
novices.Defending champion and number one seeded player Saman
Tilakaratne and Navin Samarasinghe who is the second seed player will
vie for honours this time too.
The above duo also has gained international recognition by playing in
overseas tournaments. A high standard of squash could be witnessed this
year as many players will be keen to impress in a bid to win a place in
the Sri Lanka team for the World Championships.
The entries will close on November 26 at 3.00 p.m. and the draw is
scheduled to be conducted on the following day at 3.00 p.m.
