Dairy farmers want more
Hiran H. SENEWIRATNE
The All Island Dairy Farmers’ Federation (AIDFF) urged the Government
to assist local dairy farmers to increase production of fresh liquid
milk by increasing payments.
AIDFF President Dr. Sisira Senadeera said Sri Lanka has the potential
to be self-sufficient in fresh milk if the Government assists the dairy
farming community.
One of the problems encountered by dairy farmers is the Government
owned diary manufacturing company Milco and other multinational
companies paying a very low price resulted in many dairy farmers moving
away from the sector.
Today these companies are buying a litre of milk for Rs. 23, which is
not sufficient to cope with the increasing cost of production in the
country.
In the Budget it was pledged to promote the local dairy industry and
it was given more emphasis to increase the fresh milk payment to Rs. 35
this has only increased by Rs. 2 due to the agitation from the farmer
community. “We want’s this implemented without delay”, he said.
Dr. Senadeera said Milco buys 50 per cent of the total milk
production from local farmers while the balance is purchased from
multinational companies |
