Al Azhar and GHS cager champions of Kandy

Al Azhar Central College (boys), Girls High School 'A' (girls) and Kandy Cagers (men and woman) won the Kandy District Basketball Championship organised by the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation in conjunction with the Kandy Young Mens Christian Association and the Kandy District Basketball Association and the four finals played at Trinity College courts in Kandy yesterday.

Before the commencement of the finals the teams were introduced to the Chief Guest and Chairman of the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation General Anuruddha Ratwatte, and Guests of Honour Federick Gilbert, M. Jayawardena (President KDBA) and Pastor Donald Fernando.

The main awards were distributed by General Anuruddha Ratwatte and Mrs. Carmen Ratwatte together with Federick Gilbert.

Al Ashar Central College from the village of Akurana turned out to be giant killers by defeating the strong Trinity College team 24-21 in the boys finals thus taming the lions in their own den.

They led 12-9 at the breather. In the semin finals All Azhar Central beat Trinity College 'B' 20-16 and Trinity College 'A' beat A. Ratnayake MMV 'A' 25-16. A. Ratnayake MMV who clinched the third place won the consolation trophy defeating Trinity College 'B' 25-12.

Girls Schools Championship:

Kandy Girls High School won the championship for girls schools by defeating Girls High School 'B' by the comfortable margin of 14-4 after leading 7-1 at half times.

In the semi finals Girls High School 'A' beat Colombo International School 10-3 and Girls High School 'B' beat St. Anthony's Girls School 12-5. Colombo International School won the consolation trophy defeating St. Anthony's Girls School 10-6 in the locors finals.

Inter Club Championship - Woman

Kandy Cagars won the inter club championship for women by defeating Kandy Girls High School Club 13-11 in a thriller. At half time winners led 6-4. This turned out to be an exciting encounter with both teams engaged in a neck to neck rate for supremacy and finally it was the expectance of the Kandy Cagers which helped them to pip their youthful opponents at the past.
