Thought of the Week
Dr. Jayan Mendis, Director, Institute of Psychiatry, Angoda has sent
me a copy of a very interesting book. It is a book compiled by Dr.
Sivathas of the same institute, almost totally illustrated with
photographs and paintings - most photographs taken by himself inside and
outside of the Institute.
The book is titled 'Angoda Through my Lens'. Director Dr. Jayan
Mendis has this to say about the book: "Angoda through my lens -
photography against stigma, is a challenging slogan that has been chosen
by the photographer.
Painting and photographic exhibition 'FEELINGS' was organised by our
hospital to mark the Mental Health day this year at the National Art
Gallery.
This has been the first time in the 80-year-old history of the Mental
Hospital, Angoda, organised an event of this nature. About 80 paintings
created by the inmates of the hospital and 80 photographs taken by Dr.
Sivathas were displayed. Inmates were coached by the Arts Therapist, Mr.
Chandra Wanasundera, for over two months and guided by the hospital
occupational therapists.
We have been fortunate to have Dr. Sivathas here at this time,
completing his post M.D. psychiatry training."
Most people think that the Angoda Mental Hospital is a gloomy and
disheartening place. I am sure they will have a different attitude when
they see the pictures and paintings in the book. Any further information
could be had from the Director of the Institute.
Here are some pictures from the book.
