Orange Electric donates Rs. 6m worth Laser System
Orange Electric, a fully Sri Lankan family-owned Electric Switch
manufacturing giant, donated a modern Laser Delivery System to the
Nuwara-Eliya Base Hospital.
The machine, worth over Rs. 6 million, was donated under the unique
“Light for you; Sight for me” CSR programme. The donation was financed
exclusive through the Orange Lighting business where it sets aside a
part of the sales proceeds to eradicate avoidable blindness in Sri
Lanka.
This donation was made to the Sri Lanka Eye Foundation on the request
made by its President Dr. Reggie Seimon the eminent Eye Surgeon in the
country.
Dr. Priyanga Iddawela the Consultant Eye Surgeon of the Nuwara-Eliya
Base Hospital, receiving the machine on behalf of the hospital said,
This machine will be very helpful for us to treat Diabetic patients who
are the high-risk category for Cataract.
At present patients requiring laser treatment are referred to Kandy
or Colombo Hospitals and many patients in this area are below the
poverty line thus, they avoid going to such places for treatment. Hence,
they go blind.
“We must really appreciate a local company coming forward to fulfill
a drastic need in the eye care of the country without any profit
concerns.
The Chairperson of Orange Electric and head of the “Light for you;
Sight for me” programme, Thilaka Kodithuwakku commenting on their latest
initiative said, “We must also thank the customers who relied on Orange
Bulbs. Part of the money they spent on purchasing Orange Electric Bulbs
went to a fund our CSR programme, which made it possible for us to
donate this modern eye health care equipment to the Nuwara-Eliya Base
Hospital.”
Speaking further at the occasion Mrs. Kodituwakku said that in time
to come we plan to donate more pieces of equipment to the needy
government hospital around the country.
The President of the Sri Lanka Eye Foundation speaking on the
occasion said it is commendable that a Sri Lankan Company came forward
to donate such a machine which will be of immense importance for the
people of this country.
He said that Orange Electric was benevolent enough to finance the
full cost of the machine which is Rs.6 m.
It is a fact that over 80,000 Sri Lankans will go blind if
appropriate action is not taken immediately and the Ophthalmologic
fraternity is making all efforts to minimize or eradicate this problem
and such donations like this helps us to build confidence in making our
drive towards this realistic.
