Women’s Rugby Sevens tomorrow

RUGBY: Twelve teams will vie for honours in the Women’s seven-a-side rugby tournament which will be worked off on September 30 (Sunday) at Royal College Sports Complex.

Army Sports Club and Slimline Sports Club which have reigned supreme in women’s rugby during the last few years along with Synergy SC, Rajarata SC, D. B. Welegedera MV, Seethawaka SC, Sabaragamuwa RFC, Moragane MV, Black Mares, Wild Cats, Alawwa MV and Nochchiyagama SC will compete in this year’s tournament.

The tournament will be conducted in the Cup, Plate and Bowl categories with the Bowl final scheduled for 4.30 p.m. followed by the Plate final at 4.50 p.m. and the Cup Championship final at 5.15 p.m.

After the final, a pool will be formed from which the final squad for the Asian Women’s Rugby Sevens which is scheduled for early next year will be picked.

A few years ago, the Sri Lanka Women’s Rugby team clinched the Bowl Championship at the Asian Women’s Rugby Sevens held in Singapore under the guidance of Hisham Abdeen.
