Sandaruwan breaks four-year-old record

ATHLETICS: M. K. N. T. Sandaruwan (A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala) cleared a height of 3.86 metres to break a four-year-old record in the boys’ Under 19 pole vault event at the All Island Schools Games 2007 which is now in progress at the Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.

Sandaruwan shattered the previous record of 3.85m held by Damith Maduranga of Senanayake MMV, Madampe established in 2003.

The other new record established at the School Games was also produced in the pole vault event when H. A. Nishani Hettiarachchi of Pamunugama MMV cleared 2.24 m in the girls’ U-19. This event was introduced in 2006 and this year’s winner had the honour in having the record in front of her name.

Another record was equalled when Udayanga Samarasinghe cleared a height of 1.86m in the under 15 boys’ high jump. The boy from Prince of Wales College Moratuwa now shares the record with K.K.D. Nipuna Nirmal of Dambulla National School who set the record last year.
