Sri Lanka ratifies International convention for suppression of
terrorism
NEW YORK: Sri Lanka on Thursday ratified the International Convention
for the Suppression of Nuclear Terrorism.
Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama who is in New York to attend the
62nd United Nations General Assembly deposited the relevant instrument
of ratification with the UN Under Secretary General in charge of
Treaties.
Addressing a simple ceremony to mark the occasion, the Minister said
that Sri Lanka has always strongly advocated the need to combat
terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
Sri Lanka is a party to 11 of the 13 UN Conventions on the
suppression of terrorism including the International Convention for the
Suppression of Terrorist Bombings and the International Convention for
the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, he said.
He further pointed out that Sri Lanka has served as the Chairman of
the UN Ad-Hoc Committee on Measures to Eliminate International
Terrorism, and that it was among the first signatories to the Nuclear
Terrorism Convention which was successfully concluded in 2005 under its
chairmanship.
The Under Secretary General commended Sri Lanka’s consistent support
for building the legal infrastructure in the global combat against
terrorism.
