Lions roar at biggest show

THE LIONS District 306B-2 has organised a series of events to mark
the Golden Jubilee of Lionism in Sri Lanka. District Governor Lion
Mahesh Pasqual has appointed a team of dedicated Lions to organise
meaningful projects needed by the community.
The service projects will commence with religious observances at the
Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura on October 3, at 8.30 a.m. followed by a
service program at the Municipality Complex Anuradhapura with General
Health/Eye/Dental/Diabetes screening clinics.
An Identity Card mobile unit will be set up to issue national
Identity cards. The police has organised a Road Safety Demonstration, to
educate the public including schoolchildren on road safety.
Refreshments and milk would be provided to all those visiting the
project site. Over 50 doctors and 100 nurses would be in attendance, in
addition to pharmacists and other allied staff. Over 4,000 patients are
expected to participate in this Mega Service Camp, District Governor
306B-2, Lion Mahesh Pasqual said.
A project for 300 disabled children has also been organised and the
children would be provided wheel-chairs, Braille equipment, toys, sweets
and educational needs and clothes. The disabled children are from the
Anuradhapura District.
District Governor Lion Mahesh Pasqual MJF will open the Lions Eye
Screening Centre in Anuradhapura. He will also open the refurbished
Blind School at Anuradhapura.
A musical show sponsored by the National Lotteries Board will be held
in the evening to entertain the public.
On October 4 a motorcade will start from Anuradhapura, with floats
depicting the various service activities conducted by the Lions District
306B2. The parade would stop at the following towns, where service
activities are programmes by the Lions Clubs in the area:
Talawa - Thambuttegama - Opening the renovated Paediatric Unit of the
hospital and distribution of stationery to schoolchildren.
Padeniya-Kurunegala-Polgahawela-Alawwa-Ambepussa.
On October 5, the parade will commence from Ambepussa via
Nittambuwa-Yakkala-Gampaha Town-Belummahara-Kadawatha and would
terminate at the Vidyalankara Pirivena, Peliyagoda.
At all these stops the Lions Clubs of the area have planned several
service projects, including donation of cows for self-employment, Eye
and health clinics, distribution of mobility equipment to the disabled
and student scholarships.
All clubs in Colombo will conduct their service projects at the
Vidyalankara Pirivena premises. Service projects include health and eye
clinics, blood donation campaign, issuing road signs, assisting the
disabled to start self-employment projects and supply of educational
equipment to students.
October 6, Multiple District Parade.
The parade commences at 7.30 a.m. near Nomads Grounds, Green Path and
go around the Vihara Maha Devi Park. Lions and Lion Ladies will
participate in the walk wearing purple.
A carnival organised at Sathutu Uyana from October 5-7 will be the
highlight of the event.
Lions Golden Jubilee meeting with the participation of all six Lions
Districts would take place at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention
Centre.

LION HEMASIRI de Silva joined the Lions Club of Matale in 1991 and he
was elected to the Board of Directors in 1993. He was elected as the
President of the Lions Club of Matale in 1997.
During his year as President the Club rose to great heights and was
able to conduct many landmarks such as the construction of a two
storeyed building for a dormitory at the Deaf and Dumb School, Koswana,
Kaikawela, valued at over 3 million with NEDLA funding, a Waiting Hall
constructed for out door patients at the Matale Base Hospital was
another monument for which he raised funds from a philanthropist in
Matale.
The Matale Lions Club under his stewardship was the recipient of the
prestigious “Star Club” award from the Lions Clubs International.
Hemasiri was also instrumental in obtaining a Fire Engine worth Rs. 8
million through District Governor Lion Soma Edirisinghe as a donation to
the Matale Municipal Council through the Lions Club of Matale.
In 1997/98 he was invited to serve in the District Cabinet as Zone
Chairman by District Governor Lion W.M.S. Wijesundera. He has served in
the District Cabinet ever since as Region Chairman on two occasions,
Cabinet Secretary on two occasions, Deputy Cabinet Treasurer and Cabinet
Treasurer.
Lion Hemasiri has won many awards as a Cabinet Officer too to name a
few, he was 1st runner up Most Outstanding Zone Chairman in 1998. Most
outstanding Region Chairman outstations 1999, most outstanding Region
Chairman 1st runner up in 2000.
In 2001 he was awarded the International President’s appreciation
award for excellence. As Cabinet Secretary in 2003 he received the
International President’s 100% appreciation award as the Cabinet
Treasurer.
At the Inaugural District Convention of District 306C 1 held in Kandy,
Lion Hemasiri de Silva was elected Vice District Governor of District
306 C 1 for the year 200/2007.
He has the unique distinction of being the only Lion in the entire
Multiple District 306 to have served as the District Cabinet Secretary
twice in the years 2001 and 2005 and also as District Cabinet Treasurer
once in 2003.
He is indefatigable, unselfish and unassuming. Hemasiri always
strives to maintain high standard and discipline in administration, to
reach excellence. He is truthful with proven honesty and integrity.
Being calm, understanding, accommodative, he inspires his colleagues and
fellow Lions to reach new horizons.
Hemasiri has a proven record as a student of St. Thomas College,
Matale. He was a House Captain and a Senior Prefect of the College for 2
consecutive years. He was a keen sportsman.
Having worked at Unilever from 1969 to 1986, he ended up as a Senior
Area Sales Manager in the year 1986. At Unilever he has attended several
Sales and Marketing courses/seminars both locally and abroad.
The training, experience and the moulding received from Unilever
International has held him in good stead to face the future challenges.
Hemasiri holds a Degree in Baking Science & Technology from the UFM
University in Bangkok, Thailand.
He is presently Director/General Manager and a shareholder of Ess
Kaye Bakery Foods (Pvt) Ltd., a company committed to upgrade the baking
and Hotel Industry in Sri Lanka. He has visited many countries in Asia,
Europe, Australia and America, and also been to five International Lions
Convention in Santiago, Osaka/Japan, Detroit, USA, Hong Kong and
Boston/USA.
Hemasiri is a Melvin Jones Fellow and an All Island Justice of Peace.
He has fulfilled his family obligations as a caring husband to his
Lion Lady Vijitha who is always by his side as the shadow giving him the
morale support in all Lionistic activities.
They are blessed with two sons. The elder son is a Software Engineer
attached to Virtusa Corporation, Columbus, USA, residing in United
States of America. The younger son is the Sales Manager of Softlogics (Pvt)
Ltd.

Badulla Lions present scholarships/school books
BADULLA LIONS Club presented scholarships and donated school books,
and stationery items to schoolchildren of prisoners of the Badulla
Prison, at a ceremony held in Badulla.

Fernando, Treasurer, Lion Deshapriya Gajanayake, Superintendent, Badulla

Lions Club of Ruhunu-Millennium
Dickwella-Matara 306A-1 and Ruhunu Lion Ladies jointly
remembered the “World Sight Day” by distributing
5000-reading glasses among the needy. Distribution of
glasses took place at an “Eye Clinic” held at the Audience
Hall of the Matara Historic Bodiya. Here attorney-at-law
