New Prison complex coming in Pallekele

KANDY: Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will lay the foundation stone for the proposed new prison complex at Pallekele today.

The inmates of the Bogambara prison will be transferred to this new complex to make way for developing and restoring the historic Bogambara prison located within the Kandy city as a tourist attraction under the Kandy city upliftment programme.

Building the new prison was on top of the agenda of President Mahinda Rajapaksa who chaired a meeting at his official residence in Kandy during a recent visit. He emphasised the need to speed up the construction. The Pallekele prison will occupy an eight-acre-land and the construction work is to be completed within three years.
