Excellent demand for John Keells low growns
Stronger demand prevailed at Ex-estate sale for the 0.7 Mkgs of teas
on offer. Both BOPs and BOPFs in the Western High Grown category
registered price gains of Rs.15/- to Rs.20/- and more at times.
A number of well made invoices sold above Rs.300/- whilst the gap for
the below best and plainer types particularly for BOPFs were marginal.
Nuwara Eliya BOPs however continued to be less sought after with a fair
number of invoices once again remaining unsold.
BOPFs on the other hand gained Rs.10/- to Rs.15/-. With limited
seasonal teas on offer, Uva BOPs and BOPFs were irregular following
quality, with the better teas continuing to sell well on special
inquiry.
High and medium grown PF1s were of a strong market with many teas
registering price gains of Rs.15/- to Rs.20/-. Low Growns too were
dearer but to a less extent. Brokens too met with a dearer market.
The 3 Mkg of Low Growns that came under the hammer this week met with
excellent demand. In the Leafy category select best BOP1s gained
sharply. Others too met with a dearer market. OP1s too advanced with
steep price increases.
Shotty Pekoes advanced Rs. 20/- to Rs. 30/-, whilst the bolder
varieties too saw better demand. OP/OPAs which were only marginally
dearer at the commencement gained as the sale progressed and were
Rs.10/- to Rs. 15/- dearer by the close.
In the Small leaf category too prices for the bulk of grades on offer
gained sharply, particularly for the tippy varieties. All in all it was
an excellent sale for the Low Growns. There was very good demand from
Iran, Russia and Turkey, whilst Jordan, Dubai, Syria, Saudi Arabia and
other Middle Eastern markets also lent useful support.
The low grown sale average at the sale of September 11 increased to
Rs.311.90 and considering the price levels this week the average is
bound to reach atleast Rs.320/-. Latest reports indicate the crop
intakes from most Low Grown planting districts have been rather low.
