SC grants bail to five teacher unions

Told not to interfere with paper marking process:

THE Supreme Court granted Rs.50,000 cash bail each yesterday to five teacher trade union leaders, who had convened an islandwide token strike in all Government schools on September 13, in defiance of the court order not to interfere with the Advanced Level paper marking.

Four-storeyed building in Maharagama gutted by fire

A four storeyed building housing a photo studio close to the Training College at Maharagama was gutted yesterday by a fire which erupted around 11.00 am, causing injury to 15 including three women who tried to escape by jumping out of the third floor.

Economy grows in second quarter

Balance of payment satisfactory:

The country has recorded a 6.4% economic growth in the second quarter of this year which is a 0.3% increase compared to the first quarter of the year, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.
