Govt to revive buffer zone proposal - Yapa

People's safety the priority:

Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said yesterday that the Government may have to consider the proposal for introducing the 100 metre buffer zone which cropped up in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami disaster.

A senior geologist said Wednesday's earthquake could not be connected to the prediction of Australian Geo Scientist Phil Cummins whose recent study said of a major tsunami that could hit countries in the Bay of Bengal.

Lankan dies in coma in Bahrain

A Sri Lankan man injured when an empty chemical drum blew up in his face died yesterday, after eight weeks in a coma. Amal Priyantha Suje, 33, was welding the drum at the boat building company Al Dhaen Craft, Sitra, when it exploded on July 10.

Economy grows in second quarter

Balance of payment satisfactory:

The country has recorded a 6.4% economic growth in the second quarter of this year which is a 0.3% increase compared to the first quarter of the year, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.
