Three killed in landmine explosion

VANTHARAMOOLAI: Three civilians were killed when a tractor transporting sand from Uppudai to Vantharamoolai in Batticaloa was caught in a landmine explosion yesterday around 2.30 p.m, a spokesman for the Media Centre for National Security told the Daily News.

Three civilians aged 40, 41 including the tractor driver and a 17-year-old youth travelling in the tractor were killed in the land mine explosion believed to have been set by the LTTE, the spokesman added.

According to the spokesman Vantahramoolai Uppudai road, a by road in the Eravur Police division in the Batticaloa district is not used by civilians for their daily transport needs.

Eravur Police are investigating.
