Rs. 30,000 m for new rail road project in Matara

COLOMBO: The main construction work on the Matara-Kataragama new rail road project which will be completed at a cost of Rs. 30,000 million already been expedited, a senior official of Rail Road and Development Authority said.

The State Engineering Corporation has undertaken the construction of the bridges on the new Rail Road over the Nilwala Ganga at Nawimana Matara which is in progress under the supervision of the Rail Road and Development Authority.

The first phase of the project railway, railway line will be constructed in a stretch of 27 kilo metres from Matara to Beliatta.

The acquisition of lands required for the project has already been completed.

The first station of the new railway line is to be constructed at Piladuwa, Matara. Fourteen railway stations which were planned to be built on this line.

Several bridges are to be constructed over the Walawe Ganga and Kirindi Oya in addition to the bridge at Nawimana over the Nilwala Ganga.

Seventy per cent of construction work on this new rail road project is to be completed before the end of next year, an official in-charge of the project said.
