Get consent before appointing SC

CRICKET: The Minister of Sports and Recreation Gamini Lokuge yesterday requested Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to get the consent of the individuals before naming them to serve in the Selection Committee of the SLC.

This decision was taken following former opening batsman Amal Silva’s refusal to accept his new job after being recalled to the four member selection panel.

Silva had served in the previous selection panel but his name was not considered when the new committee was named last week and he was set to join Chairman Ashantha de Mel, Don Anurasiri and Ranjith Madurasinghe in a four member selection committee.

However Silva had informed SLC that he is not prepared to accept the job after being overlooked for the post earlier. Former wicket keeper batsman Mahesh Goonatilleke also refused to accept his new appointment due to personal commitments.

The Minister of course had earlier appointed a five member selection committee with veteran television commentator Ranil Abeynayake also included. But Abeynayake’s name was later removed from the list due to his involvement with the media.
