COLOMBO: A stock of 106 i-com hand sets and six Global
Positioning Systems were detected in Chilaw yesterday when they were
transported in a Puttalam bound bus from Colombo, Police said yesterday.
Police detected these 106 i-com hand sets which were packed inside
two baggages belonging to the passenger when they searched the baggages
in Chilaw around 2.15 p.m. yesterday, Chilaw HQI CI T.M. Wijeratne told
the Daily News.
The Police has made this detection on an information given to the
Police about a suspicious passenger by another passenger travelled in
the same bus. The i-com hand sets are commonly used by the LTTE for
inter-communication purposes among LTTE cadres.
“The suspect is a resident from Veppankulam in Vavuniya and he had
got into the bus from Wattala area,” CI Wijeratne added.
A month back Police detected i-com sets and a base set in
Gunasinghapura, Pettah few weeks back after searching an abandoned
parcel on an information given by a civilian.
Police investigations later revealed that the communication sets were
imported by a person in Dehiwela to be handed over to the LTTE later in
Vavuniya. |
