Refinery to increase capacity

THE SAPUGASKANDA Refinery will be modernised with latest technology. ‘Refining capacity will be doubled and work has commenced, Refinery Manager Nimal Rajapaksa said.

‘At present the refinery is able to refine about 40-50% of the country’s fuel requirement and the balance 60% to 50% is imported and supplied as finished products, he said.

Rajapaksa pointed out that the production demand in the country has increased recently as such refinery capacity is insufficient to meet the local demand of products.

It has been planned to expand the Refinery at a cost of nearly US$ 800 million which will be completed by 2010.

This capacity increase will meet all the future products demand and international product specifications according to Rajapaksa.
