President pledges to accelerate development in key spheres:

President Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted that in recognition of the crucial necessity of providing electricity to all households at an affordable rate, the Government is now going ahead with the long-awaited 'coal powered electricity plant' project at Norochcholai, with the full assistance and co-operation of the people and the blessings of all religious leaders.

The UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Sir John Holmes has assured the UN's fullest support for the re-development of the Eastern Province. Mavilaru fraud: CID says Minister not involved

The Criminal Investigation Department probing the massive fraud at the Agrarian Insurance Board and Agrarian Service yesterday told the Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena that the investigations had revealed that Minister S. M. Chandrasena was not involved in any of the transactions in the Agrarian Insurance Board fraud.
