De-mining expedited
COLOMBO: The Japanese Government has provided Rs.360 million for the
de-mining programme implemented by the Nation Building Ministry,
Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.
Addressing a special press briefing at the Government Information
Department Auditorium yesterday, he said the de-mining programme has
been intensified in Ampara, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
The Government has given priority to de-mining. According to the
Minister, the Armed Forces have well trained de-mining specialists and
all resources required to implement the de-mining programme without the
support of International donor agencies.
But when such agencies offer aid the Government does not say no to
them. The development process of the East will be commenced as soon as
de-mining is completed.
“After Thoppigala, the security situation is improving and there is a
suitable environment in the East to commence rehabilitation and
development.”
