Scales not in favour of errant traders
COLOMBO: The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has netted a staggering
Rs. 10 million as fines in the first six month of 2007 by raiding
traders who violated Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
A CAA spokesman told the Daily News that the CAA has collected the
fines from errant traders who fleeced consumers during the first six
months of the year.
CAA officials have conducted 1,758 raids islandwide.
The most common offence was selling goods above the marked prices.
Selling commodities at high prices, not displaying price tags and
price boards, selling expired items, dubious marketing tactics and not
following the required standards were among other offences.
Around 1,375 raids have been carried out by CAA district officers
while the Head Office conducted 383 raids in Colombo.
The spokesman said raids were continuing throughout the island to nab
errant traders who increase prices in defiance of the Government
directive.
“We commend the public for cooperating with the authorities to nab
errant traders,” he said. |
