Disaster Management National Policy to be tabled for nod on Monday

COLOMBO: The National Policy on Disaster Management which proposes mechanism to decentralise disaster management from the Ministry to Pradeshiya Sabha level will be tabled for approval on July 30.

A Disaster Management Ministry spokesperson said the policy is to get the greenlight for implementation when the National Committee on Disaster Management chaired by the President meets on Monday.

The Committee comprising representatives from 21 key Ministries including the Foreign, Power, Defence, Finance, Health and Environment Ministries and is steered by the President, Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader.

The National Policy was drafted with inputs from experts in disaster management and representatives form these 21 Ministries.

It addresses both natural disasters like floods, earthslips, tsunami, drought and earthquakes as well as man made disasters like conflicts and effective means for addressing the woes of those affected.
