28 schools re-open in East

COLOMBO: The Education Ministry has already re-opened 28 schools in the Batticaloa district and provided all requirements including furniture and books under the ‘Eastern Resurgence’, Deputy Education Minister Nirmala Kothalawala said.

Addressing a special press briefing at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday, Kothalawala said the children of the East had been deprived of education for a long time and now they can have a normal formal school education just as other children in the country.

He said school teachers required for the East will also be provided and over 1,000 graduate teachers will be given to the East by August this year.

The Supreme Court judgement on Grade One school admissions will be given on July 30 and applications will be called for admissions before the end on August. Arrangements will be made to admit students for 2008 without any delay.
