Dutch duo remanded for trying to smuggle baby

COLOMBO: A Dutch couple have been remanded in custody in Sri Lanka on charges of trying to illegally adopt a two-week old baby, officials said yesterday.

The couple appeared before a magistrate here Thursday accused of paying large sums of money to adopt the baby and planning to take the infant off the island.

“The judge asked that the Dutch couple be kept in custody and be produced before courts on August 3,” National Child Protection Authority Chairman Jagath Wellawatte said. AFP
