Holy Family, Dehiwela clinch under 13 basketball title

BASKETBALL: Holy Family Convent, Dehiwala beat Asian International School by 41 points to 19 in the final to clinch the All Island under 13 girls `B' division basketball title in the tournament held at their own courts.

The tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association. Iresha Fernando with 14, Vidushi Dissanayake (12) and captain Umanga Fernando (11) stood out for the winners while Isurika Pathirana (9) and Madumathi Ravi (8) did well for the losers.

The winning team comprised Umanga Fernando, Ireshan Fernando, Ann Shayani Silva, Natasha Labrooy, Sharmaine Edward, Madushani Samaranayake, Shenali Perera, Hashini Silva, Amanda Solomons, Tanya Karunaratne, Meliza Abeykoon, Vidushi Dissanayake, Nayomi Fernando and Kaushalya Silva. In the semi-finals Holy Family Convent, Dehiwala defeated Sirimavo Badaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo by 26 points to 13 to earn a place in the final.

Umanga Fernando (10), Iresha Fernando with six points and Natasha Labrooy four were the top scorers for the winners while Lihini Perera scored 11 points for Sirimavo BV. In the other semi-final match Asian International School beat De Mazenod College, Kandana by 39 points to 21.

Madumathi Ravi (23) and Isurika Pathirana (10) were the main shooters for AIS while Sachini Soysa (15) and Umesha De Mel (4) were the chief scorers for the losers. In the consolation final for the third place Sirimavo Badaranaike Vidyalaya overcame De Mazenod College, Kandana in a closely contested match by a margin of 21 points to 20.

The best shooters for thw winners were Lihini Perera with 12, Tharindu Theekshani four while Sachini Soysa scored 14 points for De Mazenod. In another match played at the same venue Holy Family Convent trounced Anula Devi Vidyalaya, Galle by 60 points to four. Vidushi Dissanayake again added a massive 34 points for the winners who was well supported by Iresha Fernando and skipper Umanga Fernando adding eight and six points respectively.

Holy family Convent also trounced De Mazenod College, Kandana by 59 points to 10. Vidushi Dissanayake (19), Umanga Fernando (16) and Iresha Fernando (10) were the best players for the winners while Sachini Soysa with eight was the only scorer for the losers. Holy Family also beat Sujatha Vidyalaya, Matara by 64 points to 15. Vidushi Dissanayake, Umanga Fernando and Iresha Fernando scored 16 points apiece with Hashini Silva adding 8 points.

For Sujatha Vidyalaya Dumiduni Yashoda 7 and Prasansa Welhena 6 were the top scorers.

In a quarter final fixture Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya beat Our Lady of Victories, Moratuwa by 29 points to 10.

Prabashi Mahawatte (12) and Lihini Perera (8) top scored for the winners while Velani with seven and Achini with four were the best shooters for the losers.

Umanga Fernando, skipper of the champion Holy Family Convent, Dehiwala was adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament with her team mate Iresha Fernando being named as the best defensive player.
