Golden Square Chess C'ship from July 6 to 8

CHESS: The Golden Square Junior Inter-club Team Chess Championship 2007 will be staged from July 6 to 8 at Isipathana College, Colombo. The tournament is organised by the Golden Square International Chess Association of Sri Lanka.

The events to be worked off are boys and girls under 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 and the rounds will be conducted separately. Each team will include five players without reserves.

The players can take part at this event representing their school or club and the age will be considered before December 31, 2007. Valuable trophies, prizes and medals are on offer for the winning teams of the respective age groups.

Two teams from each age age group (boys and girls) will be selected for the final which will be conducted in the near future.

The best player among those fifty players will be awarded a free air ticket to Chennai, India to participate in a rating tournament, `It is a very rare opportunity a junior chess player gets' said the tournament organising committee. By conducting this nature of tournaments they intend to popularise the game among school children.

National Major tourney

The Colombo and Galle regional sections of the National Major tournament and the qualyfying tournament for the Women's National `B' championships will be worked off this week-end and the Colombo section rounds will commence today and will be continued till July 1 (Saturday) at Lyceum International School, Nugegoda while Galle section matches will begin tomorrow and will be conducted till July 2 at Mahinda College, Galle. Those who wish to take part at this event should contact the Tournament Secretary Sameera Gunasinghe on 0714-273979.

The top eight players from Colombo will qualify for the National `B' championships (Men's and Women's) from Colombo along with the top six men and women from Galle. The respective sections for Kandy and Kurunegala began last week and will be concluded on Saturday.

The tournaments are being conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka.
