COLOMBO: Former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Deputy Inspector General of Police Tyrrell Goonatilleke was laid to rest with full Police Honours recently. He died at the age of 80 on May 27. He served the Sri Lanka Police from 1946 until he retired in 1987 serving the Police Department for 41 years.

Twenty nine years of those years were spent in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

He is remembered even now, 20 years after his retirement as "the finest criminal investigation officer the Sri Lanka police ever produced and indeed one who could stand proudly as an equal with the best in the international arena."

It is said that "he has left as his legacy to both the Sri Lanka Police in general and the CID in particular, a high standard of professionalism, integrity and dedication which has yet to be matched."

He is the husband of Olga Goonatilleke, father of Shirani, Mozalle and Shamila and grandfather of Gaurav, Taneeshya, Arithra, Rehantha and Soraya.
