Major Sports Assembly meeting here in November

Meeting : For reasons best known, the coming to be of the
Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General assembly meeting here in
November, will undoubtedly be a tremendous boost to the local tourist
industry, serve to uplift the country's image and more importantly act
as an incentive and encouragement for the all-round good of sports in
the island.
This first ever major happening which takes place from the 5th to 9th
of November 2007, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, does affirm the
confidence and trust reposed by the CGF in the National Olympic
Committee of Sri Lanka - whose administrative and organizing ability has
always been found to be so geared, to handle occasions of this magnitude
and nature.
There are 71 countries, each of which through their individual
Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) are affiliated to the Commonwealth
Games Federation. And, so with 3 representatives from each of the CGA's
and 16 executive board members, the CGF General assembly will have a
participation of 229 delegates and with yet other personnel there is
bound to be a gathering of 300 in number.
The 71 countries which come within the frame work of the CGF are from
the regions of Africas, Americas, Asia, Caribbean, Europe and Oceania.
The tentative programme of the CGF General Assembly meeting will be
as follows:-
November 2007
5 and 6 - Sports Committee meeting
6 and 7 - Executive Board Members meeting
8th - Regional Meeting
8th - Anti doping Meeting
8th - Evening opening ceremony at 7 p.m. BMICH
9th - General Assembly at a particular stage in the General assembly
meeting, India will make a presentation as to how well they are prepared
and organized for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
There were three contending to host the 2014 Games in Nigeria,
Scotland and Canada. Canada has since pulled out and, the General
assembly will on the final day conclude with having to decide between
Nigeria and Scotland and declare their choice.
The local arrangements for this prestigious conference is in the
hands of, Joseph Kenny, the Chairman of the Conference Management
Committee, while the President of the NoC, Hemasiri Fernando, is the
overall Chairman of the entire operation. |
