PC arrested for graft

COLOMBO: Colombo Chief Magistrate Sarojani Kusala Weerawardane
yesterday ordered a Police Constable attached to Kirindiwela Police be
remanded for allegedly accepting a bribe to allow an illicit Brewery in
the area.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption
produced the suspect before the Colombo Chief Magistrate. The
Commission’s officers arrested the suspect while accepting the
gratification .
The complainant Upul Kumar of Henegama informed the Commission that
the suspect demanded Rs.25,000 in return for permitting the operation of
the Brewery.
The complainant who is doing farming conducted the Brewery for past
five years and the other Police stations in the area too had filed cases
against him.
The complainant had promised to pay the suspect Rs.20,000.He had paid
the first instalment of Rs.13,000 and was parting with the balance
Rs.7000 when the Bribery sleuths arrested the PC.
The Commission told the court that it would file a report on the
proceedings at the next hearing.
The Magistrate ordered the suspect be remanded until May 17. |
