CRICKET: Left hander Malinda Warnapura hit a career best knock
of 242 as Sri Lanka 'A' continued their dominance against the touring
Bangladesh 'A' team on the second day of their first 4 day unofficial
test match worked off at the Colts CC ground in Havelock Park yesterday.
Warnapura's magnificent double century helped Sri Lanka 'A' reach a
mammoth 547 for 6 in their first innings and the visitors finished the
day on a critical 123 for 6 still needing a further 224 runs to avert
the follow on mark.
The main damage was done by the pace trio of Akalanka Ganegama (1),
Sujeewa de Silva (1) and Ishara Amarasinghe (2) shared five wickets
between them.
However the day certainly belong to the 27 year old left hander
Malinda Warnapura who tormented the Bangladesh attack for nearly five
sessions while stroking a trail blazing 242 runs.
He faced a total of 367 deliveries and his marathon innings included
as many as 28 boundaries and two sixes.
He was also associated in a splendid third wicket partnership of 376
runs together with his skipper Thilan Samaraweera who also went on to
hit a superb 162 from 281 deliveries with the help of thirteen
boundaries. Warnapura also passed a landmark in his career while
completing five thousand runs in first class cricket in his 107th
encounter.
Warnapura said that he worked for his runs at the beginning of the
innings and his main target was to bat for three or four sessions. "I
had to play a major role in this match as we were in a spot of trouble
at one stage and I am happy that we were able to post a big score at the
end. I am not all that disappointed that I could not get pass the 250
run mark because it has been real hard work throughout these two days".
Warnapura said that this is one of the better tracks that he had
batted in his whole career even though he has represented Colts CC in
the Premier League tournament. "This is a superb wicket to bat and I
really enjoyed batting along with skipper Thilan Samaraweera and there
is no other way that you can get out unless you throw your wicket away".
Warnapura also acknowledged the words of encouragement and the advice
he received from his captain Samaraweera who was always there, backing
him throughout the innings. "Thilan was a source of inspiration for me
from the start and he always kept on encouraging me to reach my goal
without making any mistakes".
Warnapura said that earlier he used to bat at number five but was
promoted in the order following the instructions of Sri Lanka 'A' coach
Chandika Hathurusinghe during their recent tour of the West Indies and
India.
The Sri Lanka 'A' innings was further boosted during the latter
stages of the innings by a sparkling half century from all rounder Upul
Chandana who smashed three fours and hoisted three sixes in making
exactly fifty runs from just 46 deliveries.
