National policy on sports to be drawn up

SPORTS: A national policy on sports will be drawn up for which
the support and assistance of those who have been involved in playing
and administration will be required," said the Minister of Sports (Non
Cabinet) Bandula Basnayake.
He made these observations when he addressed the annual inter-house
sports meet of Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy, as the Chief Guest at the
Bogambara Stadium in Kandy on Friday.
Minister Bandula Basnayake said that he has been involved in sports
for the past 37 years as a player and administrator. He was an old boy
of Vijaya College, Matale and represented the school in many sports and
ended up playing for the national hockey team.
With his long experience in the field of sports he intends to get the
support and assistance of those involved in various sports to draw up a
national policy on sports which will be a guideline and will streamline
the process.
He said that physical training for all, especially the school
children is vital as it strengthens the body and makes them healthy
persons which in turn helps them to accomplish the task whatever they
may be in a fitting manner.
Sports will be taken to the provinces in a big way and efforts will
be made to improve it on a large scale.
Media Officer of the Ministry of Education Premasara Epasinghe said
that sports not only builds the physique but also the character. It
teaches us leadership and helps us to face any challenge with confidence
and also to accept both victory and defeat in the same spirit. Therefore
it is vital that everyone participates in sports which in short will
make them responsible citizens which is the need of the hour.
Premasara Epasinghe concluded by stating that not only participants
but also watching sports activities gives one immense pleasure therefore
special emphasis should be placed in sports in the schools curriculum to
bring forth responsible citizens who will be an asset to the country.
The principal of Mahamaya Girls College Mrs. Indira Witharanarachchi
delivered the welcome speech. |
