CRICKET: Underdogs Trinity College came out with honours at
the end of first day’s play in the 91st Kandy’s Battle of the Blues
against St. Anthony’s College which began at the Asgiriya Stadium,
yesterday. The match will be continued at 9.30 a.m. today.
Trinity’s skipper Sachith Pathirana won the toss and decided to take
the first lease of the wicket.
Trinity’s openers Wasitha Munasinghe and Dilan Gangoda gave them
their best start for the season when they put on 102 for the first
wicket. In fact they were 100 for no loss at lunch and looked set for a
big stand.
But that was not to be as Dilan Gangoda was dismissed immediately
after lunch for 44 when he came out to hit spinner Kasun Ekanayaka and
was stumped by Jerame Siegertsz. He hit 4 fours and faced 106
deliveries.
Spinner Kasun Ekanayaka struck a deadly blow in the very next
delivery when he had Trinity’s skipper Sachith Pathirana caught at silly
mid on by Mahinda Perera for a duck. Rushan Jaleel who came in next
prevented the hat-trick.
Antonian skipper Selvyn bowled Derrick Joachim for a duck with a
yorker in the last of his 9th over.
In the first ball of his next over Selvyn Jamian trapped opener Dilan
Gangoda in front for 66 which had 9 fours off 140 deliveries. He was in
line for a hat trick, but the next batsman is Avinda Bulunuwewa played
down the next delivery which was a no ball.
The Trinitians from a healthy 102 for no loss at one stage stumped to
121 for 4. But Rushan Jaleel (30) and Avinda Bolumuwewa (27) batting
with caution 59 runs for the fifth wicket to take the total to 180
before Bulunuwewa was dismissed for 27. Trinitians were once again
comfortably placed at 201 for 5.
But they lost the next three wickets for the addition of just five
runs as the tail failed to wag. Rushan Jaleel who held on for quite some
time was run out for 30 facing 80 balls and hitting 4 fours.
Off spinner Kasun Ekanayake bowling very tidily captured 4 for 45,
while skipper Jamion had figure of 2 for 43.
Antonians lost their first wicket that Gimhana Dissanayake at 15
dismissed by Bulunuwewa for 10.
Then in the penultimate ball of the day spinner Sachith Pathirana
cleaned bowled from Siegertsz for 12 and would have had Harshana
Medagoda caught at silly off in the last delivery of the day, but the
catch was not taken.
