Call to set up Special Women’s Police Task Force
COLOMBO: The women’s wing of the Democratic Unity Alliance (DUA) in a
resolution called upon the Government to set up special Women’s Police
Task Force in every police station to give a sympathetic ear to the
grievances of women who have been marginalised in society.
DUA Deputy Secretary General Sheron Hameed addressing the DUA women
delegates to mark the International Women’s Day said women have been at
the receiving end of violence.
We need a serious approach that will actually assure women of their
dignity in society”, she said.
Speaking on this year’s theme ‘Ending Impunity for Violence Against
Women and Girls’ Hameed said the law enforcing institutions must be
strengthened to give confidence to women that their troubles and
anxieties would be taken care of.
She said one way to ensure that is to set up a Special Women’s Police
Force.
‘We have seen that women can and do empathize with women who have
been ill-treated by husbands or other males. So a special police force
would go a long way to empower women’.
