Gayan - overall champ of Rex Hill Super Cross
Bernard PERERA in Matugama
MOTOR RACING: Gayan Sandaruwan became the overall champion in
the racing events at the Rex Hill Super Cross at Matugama yesterday.
This year he made three victories in the racing class to carry away
the Rohitha Abeygoonewardene Challenge Trophy. In the standard category
it was Sampath Kumara who won the trophy.
Kumara had two wins the Street Trail Bikes and the Standard Open
event. Gayan Sandaruwan was the pre-event favourite as his previous
record was on top.
He has won the two previous championships here on the Matugama
circuit Gayan was in great form yesterday just a week after winning the
Carlton Super Cross in great style.
In the racing 125 cc event Gayan was a late starter and it was Tuan
Ossen and Pasindu Peiris in front for almost two laps. Gayan using all
his experience handled the machine well specially in the corners to go
past both leaders. From there onward it was smooth moving for him until
the end.
Here Pasindu and Ossen fought a big battle for the second and third
positions. Pasindu went ahead of Ossen be the runner-up.
The open event to it was the same positioning but the ultimate winner
was Gayan. Pasindu took the second slot with Ossen having a mishap could
not finish the event. Uhan Rajith Silva was placed third in the event.
The final event for Racing Bikes too went to Gayan Sandaruwan. In
this event there were many mishaps with many riders falling and coming
back to the track.
But none could keep pace with the leader Gayan. Pasindu was the most
unlucky rider here when he had to pull out when he got entangled with a
another rider and lost the second position. With his pull out Ossen and
Sohan Maduwantha were placed second and third.
Sampath Kumara first won the Street Trail Bikes up to 250 cc ahead of
Buddhika Sandaruwan who won the day’s first event. Rohana Jayaratne
another experienced rider took the third position.
In final event for the day saw Sampath Kumara take honours once again
with his dare devil riding. He was well ahead of Kamal Prasanna and
Nuwan Dassanayake when he received the chequered flag. This victory was
vital for him to receive the major trophy for standard events.
Akila Maddumage, the boy from Matugama was outstanding in the
under-13 age group winning the event comfortably. He was followed by
Thilina Maduwantha and Imal Manchanayake.
Ishan Dassanayake excelled in the under-16 age category when outrode
Rumaisha Buultjens and Sohan Maduwantha. Ishan went on to make a double
winning the racing up to 80 cc category. These two victories proved that
Ishan will be a big threat to top riders in the future.
