Over 2,000 flee LTTE atrocities, arrive in cleared areas

ERAVUR: Another batch of over 2,000 civilians have fled the uncleared areas in the Batticaloa district and arrived in the cleared areas in the district to escape from LTTE atrocities.

Batticaloa Government Agent S. Arumeinayagam said 3,225 people belonging to 1,050 families have been displaced in this manner from Vavunativu and Eravur Pattu Divisional Secretariat areas during the last three days.

Most have now been temporarily accommodated in government buildings in Kalavanchikudi and Manmunai North while others are living with friends and relatives.

The Government in collaboration with the UN High Commission for Refugees and several other organisations is making arrangements to provide them with tents, and sanitation and other infrastructure facilities.

Food will not be a problem since the government stores had adequate food stocks for distribution.
