Govt to popularise local products among consumers

COLOMBO: The Government is to implement a plan to encourage consumers to buy local products to develop the economy under the Mahinda Chinthana 10-year Development Plan of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

This was revealed by President's Senior Advisor, Basil Rajapaksa at a meeting held at the President's Secretariat yesterday to discuss an effective economic programme focused on local products.

He said in foreign countries these programmes are very successful. Such programmes have immensely helped the development of those countries.

The Government hoped to implement this plan in three stages - by motivating the consumers to buy local products, supplying high quality local products to the market sufficiently and providing all necessary facilities to the producers.

He pointed out the importance of having a systematic programme jointly with the Government, private sector and intellectuals for this purpose and instructed the Secretaries of the Ministries to prepare this plan immediately.
