Dissanayake recovers to outbox Jayaratne

BOXING: The second edition of the Open Air Boxing Championship organised by the Central Province Boxing Association got under way at the George R. de Silva Complex in the heart of the city of Kandy yesterday afternoon.

Highlight of the days proceedings was the bout in the age category 17 to 25 years under 54 kilogram in which E.A.S. Dissanayake of Pilimatalawa Central College recovered to win with the referee stopping contest following a compulsory count limit in round two.

Earlier in the same round his opponent M.M.D.G.M. Jayaratne of St. Sylvester’s College dealt two crushing blows which forced the winner to a compulsory count limit and indicated to the referee that he was fit to continue fighting. But a minute later Dissanayake emerged winner on the same basis.

The Chairman of the People’s Bank P.A. Kirivandeniya was the chief guest at the opening ceremony with the DIG Central Province Nimal Mediwake and Vice Presidents of the Kandy District Sports Foundation Maurice Perera and Leslie de Zoysa as guests of honour.

The other bouts worked off during the day/night open air boxing is as follows:

Fly weight ‘A’ 48-51 kgs 17 to 20 years: A.M. Seneviratne (St. Sylvesters’) beat M.D.G.S. Madusanka (Swarnajothi Vidyalaya) 2-1 on points.

Light fly weight ‘B’ 44 to 46 kgs - 15 to 17 years: M.M. Prabhashwara (Peradeniya MMV) beat C. Thuduwewatha (Pilimatalawa MMC) 3-0 on points.

Light Weight ‘B’ 52 - 54 kgs - 15 to 17 years: S.P. Ariyaratne (Peradeniya MMV) beat R.W.M.H.C. Mendis (Wattegama MMV) 2 - 1 on points. L.A.T.M. Liyanage (Dharmaraja College) beat M.G.R.G. Prasanna (Mahanama College) on 2 - 1 points.

Feather Weight ‘B’ 50 to 52 kgs - 15 to 17 years: W.G.K.I.B. Wetakepotha (Nugawela Central) beat G.G.N.W. Wijewardena (Kingswood College) on points 2-1. H.D.N. Leelachandra (Mahanama College) beat H.N.M. Hettiarachchi (Dharmaraja College) on points 2-1.

Light Fly Weight 45 to 48 kgs - 17 to 20 years: H.S.A.S. Kalpage (Peradeniya MMV) beat A.A.K. Seneviratne (Kadugannawa MMV) referee stopped contest. W.A.D.C.A. Weerasinghe (Mahanama College) beat D.N.C.I. Kulatunga (Dharmaraja College) referee stopped contest.

Light Weight ‘E’ 51 to 54 kgs - 15 to 17 years: S.M.C.R.D. Samarakoon (D.S. Senanayake College) beat D.S.A.P. Gunatillake (Peradeniya MMV) on points 2-1. M.D. Kumara (Vidyartha College) beat A.G.A. Jayawickrema (Wattegama MMV) on points 3 - 0.
