FOOTBALL: A goal in the dying stages of the game saw Blue Star Sports
Club, Kalutara score a thrilling 3-2 win over Kandy York Sports Club in
their KIT Premier League soccer tournament match organised by the
Football Federation of Sri Lanka and played at the Bogambara Stadium in
Kandy on Sunday. At half time the scores were level at one all.
York Sports Club were unlucky to lose this match as their forwards
often lacked the co-ordination to penetrate their opponents defence when
the opportunities came their way. With the game being barely one minute,
Blue Star SC drew first blood through a goal by centre forward Mohamed
Faeen.
But in the 7th minute Kandy York hit back when they took play into
their opponents territory and centre forward B.I. Prassanga gave the
finishing touches by finding the net to equalise.
But this was short lived as Blue Star SC once again took over the
lead in the 12th minute when Fazeen sent a cross pass to flanker F.M.M.
Fauzan who beat the York custodian with a well-timed kick.
A keen fight followed and with both teams striving hard to score and
top soccer was witnessed. In the 25th minute Kandy York once again
equalised through a good goal by centre forward P.H.N. Chaminda.
What followed in the next 60 minutes of play was fine soccer and both
teams fortified their defence to prevent their opponents getting the
decider, but the rain which during the match made conditions slippery
and muddy. But still they produced exciting fare.
In the 85th minute of the match Blue Star SC scored their winning
goal through centre. M.B.M. Rameez and there after everything was over,
bar the shouting.
B.L. Priyanga Perera refereed assisted by Priyanga Namal and M.
Noordeen in the touch lines.
