Run for Peace on October 1

ATHLETICS: Over one thousand competitors will take part in the International Run for Peace which will be worked off in Colombo on October 1 this year.

Runners from all parts of the country including the Northern and Eastern Provinces from the three main communities Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims will take part in the run along with athletes from Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

The run has been organised by the Asian-German Sports Exchange Programme with the blessings of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the intention of bringing about friendship and understanding between the three communities and to help in the efforts of the government to bring about peace.

It will also help to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination by arranging sightseeing tours for the foreign competitors after the run. The run will consist of a 21 kilometre marathon for men and women and two mini marathons of ten kilometres and five kilometres for children and veterans respectively.

The men's and women's winner of the 21 kilometre run will receive Rs. 25,000 each while the second and third placed will receive Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000 respectively.

The men's and women's winners of the ten kilometre run will receive a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 each.
