Lt Gen Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Major General
Wijaya Wimalaratne:
Great Generals remembered with respect, gratitude and affection
On 08th August 1992 Generals Denzil Kobbekaduwa
and Wijaya Wimalaratne along with Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha who
were all travelling in one vehicle were in one fell swoop killed by
a land mine along with other officers and soldiers on the island of
Kayts in Jaffna.

Fourteen years ago, on 8th August 1992, a bomb
that exploded in an Army Land Rover at Araly Point took away a man,
an intrepid officer, a gentleman and more importantly, a true
friend.

Veera Puran Appu alias Francesco Fernando
belongs to both history and legend. He is the only personality to
emerge from Sri Lanka's history, clad in the garb of folk hero.
Folk, since he rose from among the common people of this land. And
hero, since he dared to challenge the might of British Imperialism
at its peak of power and glory during the Victorian era.
