Golf for Sahanaya, a benevolent gesture
Richard Dwight
GOLF: With a humanistic approach towards the hapless, less fortunate
the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) in the year 2004, celebrating its
125th anniversary translated their words into deeds, by making the
laudable decision of setting apart a poya day in its golfing calendar,
to raise funds for charitable causes through a golf competition.
Quite a few institutions committed to the cause of alleviating the
suffering of the needy has been assisted thus by the RCGC. This year's
recipient of proceeds from the RCGC's annual charity tournament would be
the Sahanaya National Council for Mental Health and takes place on poya
day August 9th (Wednesday) at the RCGC.
The tournament aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and
raise much needed funds for the continued development of Sahanaya
services. Sahanaya relies on donations to survive and it is the only
organization in Sri Lanka which provides a comprehensive rehabilitation
service for people undergoing treatment for mental illness.
President and Founder of Sahanaya, Professor Nalaka Mendis, is of the
view that the tournament is a wonderful opportunity to bring mental
health into the spotlight and raise the much needed funds for Sahanaya.
RCGC has selected the approved 'Sahanaya' because it is regarded as
the pivotal non-governmental body involved in the development of mental
health services training.
This stable-ford golf tournament will have a good many taking part
for the reason that it is being held to raise funds for a worthy cause.
There will be an entrance fee of Rs. 1,500 and a charge of Rs. 1,000 for
juniors. |
