Maximum security assured to villages in danger

COLOMBO: Upali Rajakaruna of Thoranegama, Galnewa, Anuradhapura, who escaped from the Welikanda, Omadiyamadu massacre by the LTTE on May 29, called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday. Deputy Speaker Geethanjana Gunawardena, President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Defence Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were also present on the occasion.

Having listened to Upali Rajakaruna, the President instructed President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to take immediate steps to strengthen security measures in areas subject to LTTE attacks and provide assistance to the dependents of victims who were killed and provide all necessary medical facilities for the speedy recovery of victims who are now undergoing treatment.

Commenting on the existing situation, the President emphasised the importance of bringing such atrocities by the LTTE to the attention of the international community and appreciated the cordiality of the Tamil brethren in the area who were ready to provide security to their fellow villagers in distress.

This is a good example of the absence of any conflict or animosity among various ethnic groups in our country, he remarked. The President also asserted that the Government will take optimum measures to bring massacre of civilians to an end.
