Two-year-old's death, suspect remanded

COLOMBO: A 25-year-old man was taken into custody by the Maradana Police Crimes Division for allegedly causing the death of a two and a half year old infant boy belonging to his mistress by attacking him with a club.

The suspect Kalinga Waduge Manjula (25) of Chilaw was produced before Maligakanda Magistrate Priyantha de Silva and remanded till June 20.

The victim was Weerasekara Mudiyanselage Dilshan Thamitha Kumara (2 yrs 3 months). JMO Alagiyawanna who held the post mortem examination said death was due to internal injuries to the child's liver caused by an attack with a blunt weapon.

Police said investigations revealed that the child's mother had been living with the suspect after separating from her husband.

The child had faced constant harassment at the hands of the suspect and he had allegedly attacked the child with a club following a quarrel with the child's mother over a financial matter.

Further investigations are continuing.
