Isipathana 10-a-side rugby champs
RUGBY: As expected Isipathana College who played with authority won
the Milo Schools under-18 ten-a-side championship beating Trinity
College Kandy 17 points (1 goal 2 tries) to nil on Sunday at Havelock
Park. The tournament was conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football
Association which was sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd for the 'Milo'
Trophy.
Right through the tournament Isipathana maintained an unbeaten record
to become the superior team of the tourney. Patans showed their
excellence in all departments of the game, this was mainly due to the
untiring efforts of their coach Hisham Abdeen who dominated the rugby
scene during the eighties.
The final was a one sided affair with Pathans spoiling all the good
work of Trinitians. Isipatana took the lemons with the score reading in
favour of them 12-0. The scorers for winners were skipper Dinusha
Chathuranga, Niroshan Fernando and Sri Nathan. Dinusha converted a try
to add the extra points.
Twenty five teams from eight provinces participated in the
tournament. The matches were officiated by the referees from the Sri
Lanka Society for Rugby Football Referees. The final was refereed by D.
Nimal. The chief guest on the occasion was Kuda Herath, Brand Manager
for 'Milo' of Nestle Lanka Ltd. |
