UPFA petition: Appeal Court issues interim order on Polls chief

COLOMBO: The Court of Appeal issued an Interim Order on the Commissioner of Elections restraining him from holding the Local Government Election to elect members to the Kobaigane Pradeshiya Sabaha scheduled for March 30 until the final determination of the application before court.

The Bench comprised Justice K. Sripavan and Justice Sisira de Abrew.

The Court of Appeal order further restrained the implementation of the decision of the Returning Officer rejecting the nomination papers filed by Minister Susil Premajayantha of the United People's Freedom Alliance.

The Court issued an interim order returnable on March 15.

Petitioner UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha cited the Commissioner of Elections, Returning Officer Kobaigane Pradeshiya Sabha and the Attorney General as respondents.

Dr. Jayampathy Wickremaratne with Gaston Jayakody supported the application before court.
