Haukland meets Thamilselvan:

Upholding ceasefire during polls discussed

SRI LANKA Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Hagrup Haukland had discussions with the LTTE's political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan on upholding the ceasefire during the November polls and strengthening it further in the future.

Haukland met Thamilselvan at the LTTE's Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi yesterday.

The meeting lasted for nearly two hours where the SLMM chief also urged the LTTE to expedite the release of the three policemen in LTTE custody.

During the discussion between Thamilselvan and the SLMM chief, the issue of on-going killings in the North and East was discussed extensively. The SLMM chief has pointed out the necessity of maintaining the ceasefire agreement during the Presidential polls, sources said.

Thamilselvan responding to the SLMM chief told him of the threats the LTTE faces from para military outfits in the cleared areas in the North and East, sources said.
